Google Penguin update rocks the web – Recovery advice
No comments · Posted by Jamie in Google and SEO
Pretty much everyone who runs a website online will have heard by now of the recent Google updates, namely Penguin.
This latest update has rocked the SEO world and judging by the forums and SEO blogs there are massive mixed messages, many are complaining of a drop in rankings and upset at the latest update due to their drop, understandable no-body wants to loose rankings in Google, far to many websites these days rely totally on Google as their main source of income, however most who took a big hit did so for a reason which seems to be down to bad link building practices and web spam.
However in some cases some of the arguments are right, alot of websites popped up into the results with little or no content, irrelevant results with lots of spun content etc, lets just hope this is a glitch in the algorithm and Google update this soon.
So how can you safeguard for the future?
#1 Ensure your future marketing is not solely focused on ranking in Google, build up a great customer base, offer a great service and get some word of mouth advertising (The best sort in my opinion), checkout local press, sponsor local sports teams etc, anything to get some exposure for your business.
#2 I guess the best advice for your Google side is simply stick to the Google guidelines, link building has always been a hot topic and known to manipulate the search results, don’t get me wrong if you have great content and relevant information or offering a great service like Graphic Design and provide lots of high quality information then people should be naturally linking to you from Social Media, blogs, articles etc.
The main issue with what many have been hit for is paying to use networks and tools, many of the well known blog networks took a big hit and all got de-indexed from Google and it seems many sites received a penalty from Google for the use of these, whether this was a drop due to loss of links or manual penalty is to be debated and I don’t think anyone really knows the answer to this.
Obviously a drop in rankings for any company is a real blow and can easily destroy a business, we are now offering free reviews if your site has taken a hit, we will happily review your site and its ranking changes and give you feedback on the best methods of recovery, we will look at a few things including your past links gathered, potential onsite issues and advise you on how we can help you be a friend of Google once again.
We are now advising all our new website design clients on how to safeguard them self and the important do’s and don’ts for web marketing.
If you have a website that has been penalized or taken a drop in the rankings fee free to drop us an email with your domain name, telephone number and keywords you have dropped for and someone will get in touch with you.

Improve Magento Site Speed with Gzip
No comments · Posted by Jamie in Google and SEO, Magento Ecommerce Web Design
One of the main draw backs of Magento is normally Site Speed. However there is plenty you can do to speed up a Magento Ecommerce Website, one great technique is to enable GZip Compression.
This is a simple process by making a few changes to your .htaccess file, however this should only be done by a web developer who is familiar with working with .htaccess files, and I reccomend taking a backup of the working file before making any changes.
Find the following lines in your Magento .htaccess file and replace them with the following code.
############################################
## enable apache served files compression
## http://developer.yahoo.com/performance/rules.html#gzip
# Insert filter
SetOutputFilter DEFLATE
# Netscape 4.x has some problems…
BrowserMatch ^Mozilla/4 gzip-only-text/html
# Netscape 4.06-4.08 have some more problems
BrowserMatch ^Mozilla/4\.0[678] no-gzip
# MSIE masquerades as Netscape, but it is fine
BrowserMatch \bMSIE !no-gzip !gzip-only-text/html
# Don’t compress images
SetEnvIfNoCase Request_URI \.(?:gif|jpe?g|png)$ no-gzip dont-vary
# Make sure proxies don’t deliver the wrong content
Header append Vary User-Agent env=!dont-vary
# enable resulting html compression
php_flag zlib.output_compression on

Using YSlow for Firefox to Improve Site Speed
No comments · Posted by Jamie in Google and SEO, Web Design Tips and Tricks
Since google announced that site speed would be taken into account when ranking websites more and more clients are requesting a health check on their site speed.
One way to do this is using the free Firefox Plugin called Yslow, this is a great tool that will test the speed of your website and give you clear tips on what you can do to improve it.
In my opinion anything above 75/100 is a good score, our website homepage www.2jdesignuk.co.uk currently has a page speed of 89/100, Id be interested to hear your page speed comments on this blog.
So what improves site speed?
Here is a list taken from YSlow on ways to improve your site speed.
Some websites will be harder to do all of the above, eg Ecommerce websites and PHP websites built on platforms like Zend, or Symphony as an example as you may not be as familiar with the code, but most hand coded HTML websites and Ecommerce Websites should be able to be improved even a little bit by checking the above list.
Another great tool for checking some important SEO factors is http://www.woorank.com/en/
I hope this has been of help to you.

Is your Google Adwords Campaign Optimised? | Adwords Optimisation
No comments · Posted by Jamie in Google and SEO
We have been working closely with a number of clients on their Google Adwords campaigns and found that many people spend so much money on wasted clicks.
Google AdWords can greatly increase your business revenue if your campaign is correctly setup, there are many things to consider when setting up a google AdWords campaign, here are a few important things to take note of.
1 – Have you researched your keywords and competition
2 – Are you familiar with Negative, Broad Match, Phrase Match Keywords
3 – Have you researched and identified the negative keywords around your campaign
4 – Are your landing pages informative and relevant to the Ad and Keyword
5 – Have you split your campaigns into separate categories and created ads and landing pages for each keyword.
Ecommerce websites are one area that should have plenty of care and time put into a Google Adwords Account, the time you put in will greatly improve your return.
You could find real benefit in speaking with a Web Designer or SEO Professional who is AdWords trained, by doing this they can offer you a overall of your campaign and identify areas where you could be spending money on wasted clicks, optimise your key phrases and landing pages to improve the quality score of the landing page.
By doing this you could see your conversion rate improve and your AdWords spend decrease.
If you would like to speak to us about giving your google AdWords campaign a health check drop us an email at sales@2jdesign.co.uk

Create Google Sitemap in Magento Simple Steps
No comments · Posted by Jamie in Google and SEO, Magento Ecommerce Web Design, Web Design Tips and Tricks
This seems to be one of the things that many people find difficult in Magento.
There are huge advantages to creating and submitting a google sitemap, this will tell the search engine about all of your pages in your website, the first step is to setup a google webmaster account (Click here to signup).
After you have create your google account login to your magento admin panel and firstly setup your preferences, go to: Admin – System – Configuration – Google Sitemap Tab under Catalog most of these settings can be left as default if you are unsure.
The next step is to create your sitemap, go to: Catalog – Google Sitemap.
Then click Add sitemap
You will need to then create a folder in your ftp to hold the sitemap, I recommend this as the folder needs to have write permissions, if you are familiar with FTP create the folder and then Chmod the folder to 777, if you are unsure how to do this ask your web designer.
Once the folder is created with the chmod set to 777 go back to magento and add the sitemap filename. eg. sitemap.xml, this is the name of the file that will be created.
then add the path, for example if the folder you added to the server was sitemap you would type in here. sitemap/
Then click Save and Generate. The sitemap will then be generated and a link to the sitemap will be displayed, you can verify it worked by clicking the link.
Then copy the full url and add this to your google webmasters account, if you have any difficulty in creating a google webmaster account feel free to contact us for assistance it should take less than 10 minutes.
